Question

Question
What is Orthodontics? Who is orthodontist?
Answer

: Orthodontics is a specialty field of dentistry that deals with diagnosis and correction of dental irregularities and arrangement disorders. Orthodontist is a dentist, who is specialized in correction of dental and maxillofacial arrangement disorders. In order to be entitled as orthodontist, one should graduate from school of dentistry and attend specialty training or doctorate program that lasts 4 years or longer. Dentists are awarded the title of orthodontist, only after this specialty or doctorate training is completed successfully.

Question
What should be taken into account when an orthodontist is preferred or selected?
Answer

Orthodontic treatment is usually a long-term one and doctor-patient relationship is at the heart of success. Therefore, you should be very careful while selecting the dentist, and you should be sure whether the dentist is qualified and expert in this field. You can visit official web site of Turkish Orthodontic Society to search for an orthodontist and verify above mentioned prerequisites. (www.tod.org.tr)

After you verify that dentist is a specialist, you should be informed about the treatment and give consent. Materials used by your dentist are as important as knowledge of the dentist; if you are duly informed about quality of materials that will be placed in your mouth cavity, concerns and anxiety will be minimized that can be experienced during treatment.

Question
How long does orthodontic treatment take?
Answer

It may vary from 6 months to 36 months depending on the case and age of the patient.

Question
Is there any age limitation for orthodontic treatment?
Answer

Orthodontic treatment can be carried out at all ages, but treatment modality varies for each age range. Orthodontic treatment can be required for infants with neonatal cleft palate and also a 60-year old person, who has alignment disorder secondary to gingival retraction. While milk teeth are still present in mouth, removable plates are used for treatment; on the other hand, fixed braces that are fixed onto teeth are used when continuous teeth are present in mouth.

Question
Can orthodontic treatment be carried out at all ages?
Answer

Orthodontic treatment can be carried out for individuals, who have healthy teeth and gingiva, at all ages. Jaw anomalies are generally treated at growth process. Correction thereof requires combination of orthodontics and maxillofacial surgery procedures.

Question
What is required for orthodontic examination and planning?
Answer

Several analyses need to be carried out for diagnosis and treatment planning before an orthodontic treatment. Your orthodontist analyses your cephalometric images and determines status of your teeth in the jaw. Smile analyses and profile analyses are performed on photographs. Moreover, model analysis is required to determine whether teeth need more room or to identify a size anomaly.

Question
Some teeth need to be extracted for treatment. Is it true? Is intended extraction of tooth harmful?
Answer

Extraction of teeth for orthodontic treatment is generally not wanted by parents of most patients. However, extraction of teeth is obligatory for some cases and better and long-lasting outcomes require extraction, if teeth cannot be placed on jaw bones.

Question
How should oral health care be performed before and during the orthodontic treatment?
Answer

All caries, if present, need to be treated and dental scaling is required before an orthodontic treatment. Oral care is very important since development of dental caries and gingival diseases can be prevented only by brushing the teeth during the treatment.

Question
Does patient feels pain or sensitivity during the treatment?
Answer

In first couple of days after braces are placed, toothache is an expected condition, along with mild irritation on internal surfaces of cheeks and lips. No matter how severe your complaints are, you will not feel braces in your mouth not later than 10 days.

Question
What do I need to pay attention during my treatment? Are there any limitations?
Answer

Since brackets and braces applied on teeth during the treatment facilitate accumulation of food residues, a good oral care is very important to prevent dental caries and gingival diseases. It is also important that braces adhered on your teeth remain on surface of teeth and they are not broken. Therefore, you should pay attention on what you eat.

You should avoid solid foods (dried nuts and fruits, solid sweets and fruits such as apples, plums and quinces) and other foods that can stick on your teeth or braces and hardly removed, such as Turkish delights and fizzy drinks like Coke.

Question
How are teeth brushed after orthodontic braces are placed?
Answer

Teeth care requires attention more than usual when you have orthodontic braces. It is easy to clean a smooth tooth surface with a brush. However, indentations will develop, where bacteria can colonize, when a bracket is adhered on teeth surface. An ordinary brush can hardly reach those indentations. Therefore, special brushes, such as orthodontic brush, interproximal brush and single-bundle gingival brush, will be required along with hard-tipped dental floss that can be advanced beneath the brace, mouth shower, toothpaste with high fluoride content and oral care solutions.

Question
What is invisible plate therapy (brace-free orthodontics)?
Answer

It is a quite different treatment method than the commonly used metal or porcelain brackets with braces and rubber bands. They are produced by multiple companies, namely Invisalign, EON aligner, orthoclear and clear aligner. Invisible plate treatment in orthodontics allows management of alignment disorders with dental devices that cannot be noticed by others and do not cause a cosmetic problem. Effect of invisible or clear plate treatment, a comprehensive treatment method in orthodontics, is proved and approved in numerous cases. Curved and crooked teeth are corrected effectively with this method. In clear plate treatment, a mild pressure is applied with the help of detachable plates and a correct and effective positioning is ensured for teeth.

Question
What are the advantages of clear plate treatment?
Answer

Patients can laugh and speak comfortably during the orthodontic treatment. The apparatus is made of a transparent material that can be noticed very hardly. Patients suffer no difficulty eating or brushing teeth, since they can be detached after meals. They assure a comfortable and non-visible treatment. Since it is a transparent material, there is total aesthetic harmony.

Question
What is lingual orthodontics (invisible brackets)?
Answer

In this treatment method, brackets are adhered on posterior or lingual surface of teeth rather than anterior surface.

Question
Do my teeth get crooked again after they are corrected?
Answer

Braces will be removed from your dental surfaces after alignment of your teeth is corrected. After this procedure, retainers will be used to conserve the current status. If these devices are not used for recommended time and you do not present for follow-up visits for a long time, a misalignment will be likely.
